I haven’t seen a Clydeside Leopard since 1997. Anyway, do you have any photos of the Paisley depot or Johnston? Do you have any photos of the interior of an Alexander bodied Leyland Leopard? One other thing, how can you decipher the Clydeside Scottish and Midland Scottish fleet number?

WOW I haven’t seen a Clydeside Leopard since I was four. Anyway, do you have any photos of the Paisley depot or Johnstone depot under Clydeside or Western control? If not, Do you know any web pages that have any? Do you have any photos of the interior of an Alexander bodied Leyland Leopard? One other thing, how can you decipher the Clydeside Scottish and Midland Scottish fleet number? I mean: MPE73, what does MPE mean. Thanks Stuart.

WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED TO THAT AILSA???
[#8679495] 2007-09-08 22:47:10 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
Hi Jason, Ailsas had a bad reputation for self igniting as happened with this one when running out of service on the M8 near Hillington, had only came out of the paintshop a few weeks beforehand!!

Was this photo taken at the closed Knightswood depot?
[#8679493] 2007-09-08 22:44:45 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
Hi, photo was taken in Knightswood garage shortly after the fire in 1992, i think '92 anyway when the short term replacements for buses lost in the fire were being pressed into service.

What a great looking bus. If only the center door wasnt there it would be even better. Where did this bus go to when First took over and why did it come from Dundee in the first place???????
[#8494475] 2006-03-06 21:16:40 Left by (#0) Reply
These buses were long gone before First took over these buses entered service as a temporary replacement to buses distroyed in the Larkfield Depot fire they were used until the Leyland Olmpians came in.

WOW a single decker Ailsa lookalike - dare i say AWW lol - seriously though if anyone has any idea what this is called please email me
[#8565413] 2006-09-26 20:16:49 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
Not so much a lookalike but the real thing, was formerly AV10 and was converted after accident damage to become AS2, ended its life with Black Prince, home of many a Scottish Ailsa over the years, legalities regarding type approval prevented its use down south and it was finally scrapped.

What the hell is this? A single deck Ailsa? Goodness ive never even heard of such a beast. I had never even heard of the converts shown earlier in the gallery, i thought they only done that to the Atlanteans. I bet this bus would have been amazing at getting up East Kilbride dual carriageway (if only it operated out of Knightswood)
[#8496528] 2006-03-12 01:11:17 Left by (#0) Reply
yes there was 2
[#8496789] 2006-03-12 18:55:45 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
Strathclyde's Buses operated 2 single deck Ailsa's, the one pictured being AS1 which carried Marshall bodywork and was built as a single decker and a converted one which was double decker AV10 in a previous life and was Alexander bodied. There is a photo of it on the site.

AH41 was the only AH that was lost in the Larkfield fire when only 3 years old, good to see at least one entering preservation as it is hard to believe they are very prematurely heading for the scrap yard. Great buses.

Is that by any chance a single decker Atlantean? Where was this photo taken? How many of them were operated by Strathclyde's Buses? Cheers
[#8679502] 2007-09-08 22:51:15 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
Photto was taken outside Glasgow Central Station and is indeed a single deck Atlantean, one of 8 converted from full size deckers, very powerful wee buses.

Hi, yes they all appeared in service during 1994, I think 4 flavours of Walkers crisps were depicted, one appeared in Glasgow 100 celebration procession prior to the open day at Knightswood garage.

Unfortunately when First took over was around the time I stopped taking bus photos on a regular basis other that at rallies etc....., something which I now regret as I missed so much, now trying to play catch up with the modern stuff.... :-(

stuart, were there any of these ailsas at old kilpatrick garage? also, when were the ailsas withdrawn from the kelvin fleet thank you very much. also, do you have any pictures of the A1 and Western buses taken in the 90s? thanks again
[#8526839] 2006-05-31 22:52:08 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
I don't remember there being any Ailsas at Old Kilpatrick, mostly Dominators and the Routemasters, this being due to the amount of low bridges in the area of Dumbarton and Clydebank, with an Ailsa being 14'6" high if I remember correctly, debateable if one would actually fit inside Old Kilpatrick garage!! Have Western and some A1 to post sometime soon but doing Kelvin Central for now, glad the photos are being well received, makes it all worthwhile.

yes, had great difficulty in finding sb/kelvin central bus photos from the 90s before your website was created. have my own of first glasgow/edinburgh buses. adress www.johnsfirstglasgowphotos.fotopic.net

14'6 with low grade tyres, 14'8 with normal

Yes there were Ailsas at OK. Not many because of the low bridge at Clydebank though.

This was one of the best types of buses ever used on the 3 now the 203 going up Fernhill Road. Did they make a low-floor version or a modern model from this.
[#8625984] 2007-03-26 14:34:52 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
There is not much these days that could touch a Mk2 Nat storming up Fernhill Rd, most engines these days are so gutless or restricted to hell that they really srtuggle, even going back to the Central days with the 72, 21 etc going through Fernhill, Leopards, Ailsas and Dominators all struggled, was not the first time i saw a load of passengers being forced to walk up the hill because the driver had run out of gears!!!! There are not many hills on bus routes in the Glasgow area that could beat Fernhill Rd for steepness.

is the location of this picture old kilpatrick garage? if it is, how many ailsas were based there, and what routes did they go on. were all your pictures taken, of strathclyde's buses and kelvin central in 1992/1993. also, will you be making any more additrions to the strathclyde's buses section? thank-you
[#8520262] 2006-05-17 17:56:05 Left by Stuart (#0) Reply
The picture of the Ailsa was taken in Cumbernauld Depot, a large proportion of my photos would have been taken between 1986-1995, would expect most of the SBL ones would have been around 1992-1993, I have few more Strathclyde's Buses photos to post and some GCT as well, hopefully in the next few weeks. If anyone has any queries about locations and approx dating just drop me a note.
